Parent Advocacy Group for Educational Rights

PAGER is an advocacy group for dyslexic children:

"Dyslexia is a neurologically-based, often familial, disorder that interferes with the acquisition and processing of language.  Varying in degrees of severity, it is manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including phonological processing, reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and sometimes arithmetic.  Dyslexia is not a result of motivation, sensory impairment, inadequate instructional or environmental opportunities or other limiting conditions, but may occur together with these conditions.  Although dyslexia is life-long, individuals with dyslexia frequently respond successfully to timely and appropriate intervention." PAGER is a grassroots organization that was created the fall of 1999 to address the many problems encountered in educating dyslexic children.  It was started by a group of concerned parents and educators to address the systemic problem in the methods used to teach reading, both in the general and special education classrooms.

Through the sharing of experiences, we have discovered similar problems inherent in all learning disabilities within the label of "special education." However, our main focus at this time is primarily on those individuals who struggle to read that is a significant proportion of the children in "special education" who are often denied the type of remedial instruction they require.

PAGER's goal is to effect change at the local, state, and national levels to ensure that the quality of general and special education reading instruction adheres to current research based standards of the National Institute of Health and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH/NICHD).  It is our sincere hope that you will contact us and share your story and concerns so that we may work together from across the country to effect positive change for all children learning to read. Please let us know what has and has not worked for you.  It is through working together and utilizing all of our skills that meaningful change will occur.
