Parent Advocacy Group for Educational Rights

Mission Statement:

PAGER's mission is to bring the quality of general and special education reading instruction, at the State and local level, to current research based standards. PAGER's aim is to raise the current standards and utilize the appropriate methods of instruction to teach children with language based learning differences (dyslexia and dysgraphia, a writing processing disability.

Goals and Objectives:

  • To support parents on the immediate needs of their children through the sharing of experiences and resources.
  • To provide strategies on how to successfully advocate for your child within their school setting.
  • To hold the educational system accountable for providing an appropriate and effective education for all children.
  • To empower parents to advocate successfully for their children.

PAGER is still growing in numbers. We now have over 300 families on our mailing list.  It is very clear that the parents of Maryland want to see standardized reading reform across the State.  We have been attending numerous IEP meetings and still see a profound lack of understanding regarding the necessary scientific approach required to teaching reading effectively. The National Reading Panel Report (2000) states that a systematic, sequential, highly structured, explicit and intensive instruction of phonemic awareness, phonetics, reading fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies is essential in teaching reading. We want to see direct instruction of all these essential components of reading being taught to all children.
